San Jose Takes Another Step Forward with Airport Connector Project

The City Council unanimously approved the next phase of the San Jose Airport Connector Project, a visionary plan to link Diridon Station with San Jose Mineta International Airport. Stations are tentatively planned for SJC Terminal A, Terminal B, Long-term Parking, the Coleman San Jose Market Center, SAP, and Diridon. This isn’t just a win for commuters—it’s a signal that San Jose is serious about redefining urban transportation with innovation and sustainability at its core.

The star of this initiative is Glydways’ technology: autonomous, electric vehicles—called “Glydcars”—that glide along dedicated guideways. These sleek, zero-emission pods promise on-demand, point-to-point service, cutting out the hassle of fixed schedules. Whether you’re racing to catch a flight or heading to Downtown San Jose for a meeting, this system is designed to get you there fast, with a capacity to move thousands of passengers per hour.

Of course, a project this ambitious doesn’t come without questions. Cost and feasibility are hot topics, and rightfully so. But the City Council’s green light for Phase 2a shows they’re not diving in blindly. This phase will dig into the nitty-gritty—ridership forecasts, revenue models, and community feedback—to ensure the project pencils out. It’s a smart, deliberate approach that balances bold vision with real-world pragmatism, setting the stage for a system that’s both groundbreaking and grounded in San Jose’s needs.

What’s really thrilling is the potential ripple effect. If this initial stretch succeeds, the Airport Connector could expand across the South Bay, weaving a network of high-tech transit options that elevate the entire region. Imagine a future where getting around San Jose is as effortless as it is eco-friendly—a future where our city leads the charge in sustainable mobility. This project isn’t just about connecting two points; it’s about connecting San Jose to a bigger vision of what a modern city can be.

Microsoft Bets Big on North San Jose with New Data Center

Even as Microsoft pauses other investment plans across the country, the company is pushing ahead with a North San Jose data center that has been in planning since 2017. The data center will utilize 397,200 SQFT on a 64.5-acre site at 1657 Alviso-Milpitas Road. The data center is expected to generate approximately $8.4 million in development impact fees and more than $10 million in annual property tax revenue. This financial influx will provide resources for city improvements, from upgraded infrastructure to enhanced public services.

The data center will likely draw more businesses and talent to North San Jose, sparking a ripple effect of growth and opportunity. Already home to numerous tech companies, this area is on track to become an even more dynamic center of innovation. The city stands to gain between $3.6 million and $6.4 million in annual revenue from taxes and fees related to the project.

San Jose’s leadership deserves credit for creating an environment that welcomes such developments. By streamlining processes and investing in infrastructure, the city has positioned itself as a partner to tech innovation. The Microsoft data center is a direct result of these efforts, and it hints at more exciting projects on the horizon.

Jackie’s Place Brings Soulful Flavors to Downtown San Jose

Downtown San Jose will get a little bit tastier with the arrival of Jackie’s Place, a brand-new restaurant serving up authentic soul food. This will be Downtown San Jose's first dedicated soul food restaurant and the second location for Jackie's Place. The original is in Japantown and has a Yelp rating of 4.5 with 1,700 reviews.

Nestled in the heart of SoFA, this spot is ready to dish out plates piled high with Southern classics—think crispy fried chicken, slow-cooked collard greens, and mac and cheese. It's located right next to Nirvana Soul, one of the hottest coffee shops in Downtown San Jose.

What’s even better? Jackie’s Place is rooting itself in San Jose by sourcing fresh ingredients from nearby farms and suppliers. It’s a small but meaningful way this restaurant is giving back, creating jobs and strengthening the local food chain. The cozy setup—wooden tables, soft lighting, and the mouthwatering aroma of fried goodness—only adds to the draw.

Downtown San Jose’s food scene is already a melting pot of flavors, and Jackie’s Place is a delicious new thread in that tapestry. The grand opening of Jackie's Place will take place on April 27 during the SoFA District block party.

Alviso's Tech Transformation: A New Data Center Hub

San Jose's northern district of Alviso is stepping into the spotlight with a bold new proposal. A massive data center is on the horizon, set to transform a patch of land once dreamed up as part of an entertainment district.

Located near the popular Topgolf venue, this proposed development includes a three-story data center spanning 295,100 square feet, paired with a three-story energy supply facility adding another 167,400 square feet—totaling a whopping 462,500 square feet. This is a step up from an earlier proposal of 346,900 square feet, showing growing ambition for the site.

The story of this land adds a fascinating twist. Back in 2018, Terra Ventures envisioned an entertainment district here, complete with restaurants, shops, hotels, and the Topgolf that’s now a local favorite. While most of that vision didn’t materialize—one hotel site at 7 Topgolf Drive even faced foreclosure—the area is now pivoting to tech and residential growth. That same hotel site is being considered for 780 affordable apartments, proving San Jose’s ability to adapt and thrive.

Challenges like securing enough electricity for the data center and financing affordable housing are real, but they haven’t slowed the excitement. This project could help draw more tech giants, spark job growth, and solidify San Jose’s place as a global tech powerhouse.

JOEY Brings Global Flavors to Westfield Valley Fair in San Jose

JOEY, the Canadian-born restaurant chain with a flair for globally inspired dishes, has opened its first Bay Area location at Valley Fair. Led by “Top Chef Canada” winner Matthew Stowe, this two-story eatery promises to elevate the dining experience with a menu that spans continents and a vibe that’s equal parts stylish and welcoming.

JOEY’s menu is a passport to flavors from Japan, Mexico, India, Italy, and China, offering everything from truffle udon carbonara to chargrilled pork chops with Mexican street corn. It’s the kind of place where you can go bold with a Bollywood Butter Chicken or keep it classic with a perfectly cooked burger. And for dessert? Their signature Individually Baked Apple Pie is already calling my name.

What makes this addition so exciting for San Jose is how it fits into the bigger picture of Westfield Valley Fair’s transformation. This isn’t just a mall anymore—it’s a foodie haven. With heavyweights like Eataly, Din Tai Fung, and Baekjeong already drawing crowds, JOEY joins a lineup that’s putting "Uptown" San Jose on the map as a destination for dining. The restaurant takes over the former Bamboo Sushi space, which closed quietly in September 2023, and brings a fresh energy to the mall’s bustling restaurant row.

While the exact opening date has been a bit of a moving target—initial hints suggested April, but details remain under wraps—the anticipation only adds to the excitement. Next time you’re strolling through Valley Fair, keep an eye out for this one.

New Affordable Housing Project on The Alameda in San Jose

A new affordable housing project takes shape near Downtown, offering a beacon of hope amid the city’s ongoing housing challenges. As reported by The Mercury News, this development is more than just a collection of apartments—it’s a bold move to make San Jose a more inclusive, thriving place to live.

What sets this project apart is its use of advanced construction techniques, which could pave the way for faster, more cost-effective housing solutions across the region. The units are built offsite leveraging modular construction, and then assembled like LEGOs at the final construction site. The apartments are tailored to low-income residents, featuring a variety of unit sizes to accommodate different families and individuals.

The project will come in at seven stories and include 120 parking spaces, some of which are below ground. Amenities would include a rooftop deck, gym, and a lounge area.

Beyond the homes themselves, this project promises a boost to San Jose’s economy. Construction will generate jobs, and once residents settle in, local businesses near Downtown are likely to see increased foot traffic and spending. This ripple effect underscores how affordable housing isn’t just about shelter—it’s about strengthening the entire community. San Jose’s growth as a tech and innovation hub depends on its ability to support all its residents, and developments like this help make that vision a reality.

This effort fits into a broader wave of progress in San Jose. From workforce housing to mixed-use projects, the city is embracing creative solutions to meet its housing needs. Partnerships between developers, city leaders, and community groups are driving these initiatives forward, proving that collaboration can yield real results. As San Jose evolves, it’s carving out a reputation as a city that balances ambition with accessibility—a place where opportunity isn’t just for the few, but for everyone.

San Jose Powers Up: PG&E’s Microgrid Funding

Starting April 3, PG&E opened the second wave of its Microgrid Incentive Program (MIP), offering a hefty $36 million to fund clean-energy microgrids in disadvantaged Bay Area communities.

As PG&E explains, these localized energy systems can operate independently during power outages, ensuring that critical facilities like hospitals, fire stations, schools, and even grocery stores stay powered up when it matters most. With clean-energy options like solar, battery storage, and even small hydroelectric projects, this initiative isn’t just about keeping the lights on—it’s about doing it sustainably.

The application window, which runs through May 30, 2025, invites communities to dream big. In the first wave of funding, PG&E awarded up to $43 million to nine North Bay projects, with grants ranging from $1 million to $6 million each.

For those ready to get involved, PG&E has made it straightforward: visit www.pge.com/mip for details or submit your project ideas directly to communitymicrogrids@pge.com by the May 30 deadline. As the nonprofit partner shaping San Jose’s parks and civic spaces since 1996, we’re thrilled to see investments like this that uplift our neighborhoods.
