SubZERO 2018

The 11th annual SubZERO festival kicks off tonight! Several blocks in San Jose's SoFA District will be shut down for live music, art, food trucks, and culture. The event is runs from 6pm to midnight both today and tomorrow and you can see the full list of participants over here.

The 10th Annual SubZERO Festival is this Fri & Sat!

This weekend, in addition to the monthly South FIRST FRIDAYS art walk, the SoFA district will be celebrating the 10th annual SubZERO Fest. Every year the festival gets bigger and better, and it plays an important role in the neighborhood's culture and identity.

If you're not familiar with South FIRST FRIDAYS, the streets on 1st St south of San Carlos St are closed off to cars during the art walk. This gives an opportunity for local artists and DIY vendors to come together and share their work with the public. People crowd the streets to visit some of their favorite local shops, and artists get a chance to show off their work. Local art galleries are also open a little later so visitors can get a chance to explore.

SubZERO builds on this concept by adding stages for music, inviting many more performance artists, and bringing in 10+ food trucks. To get a sense of what to expect, the video below gives a small taste of the festival in 2016.

If anyone asks me where the indie scene is in the South Bay, I can't imagine a better example. It's still a small scene, it's still growing, it deserves support, and it is most definitely worth checking out. Best of all, it's all free to attend! For more information, check out the website, including the music schedule, the list of artists & vendors, and the art walk map.

SubZERO 2016 kicks off tonight and continues tomorrow!

One of my favorite arts festivals in the Bay Area kicks off tonight and continues all the way to tomorrow night in Downtown San Jose's SoFA District. Below is the description straight from the SubZERO website:

"Focused on emerging and present subcultures thriving in our region, SubZERO is a DIY, artistically bent, hi/lo-techno mashup where street meets geek. Come downtown on June 3rd & 4th to San Jose's SoFA District from 6pm 'til midnight for an inspired evening of arts & culture. In addition to the South FIRST FRIDAYS monthly art walk you'll find outdoor stages of entertainment plus artists, performers & musicians celebrating the indie creative spirit!"

There are hundreds of art exhibits and live performances spanning multiple blocks, all of them free. Three different stages will be playing live music. Food Trucks will keep you nourished and a beer garden focusing on local craft beers will help your brain absorb all of that art and culture.

Hope to see you guys there! To see the full list of galleries, artists, vendors, and musicians, head over to the SubZERO website!

The SubZERO Festival Kicks off Tonight!!!

One of the best Arts Festivals in the Bay Area kicks off tonight and continues all the way to tomorrow night in Downtown San Jose's SoFA District. Below is the description straight from the SubZERO website:

7th Annual SubZERO Festival Tomorrow AND Saturday!!!

One of the best festivals in the entire Bay Area is happening tomorrow--and for the first time SubZERO has been extended to take place across two days! It is going to be truly epic for 2014.

I don't even know where to begin. You'll have hundreds of vendors, dozens of galleries, live music across three different stages, 11 food trucks, a beer garden, and all sorts of interesting surprises. This is a must-attend event for anyone who is a fan of Downtown San Jose.

The festival will take up at least three city blocks along S. First Street from San Carlos all the way to Reed. I would recommend parking in the Convention Center and walking across the street. Below you can see a list of artists and vendors participating as well as the food trucks. For more info and a music schedule, check out the SubZERO Website.

Wednesday Wishlist: More Subzero-like Events in SoFA

Subzero yet again mesmerized thousands with tons of unique entertainment, food, and art... with often times 3 or 4 main attractions happening simultaneously. This week's wishlist is for more events like this in SoFA, which is uniquely suited for the arts in San Jose. We have Zer01 coming in September, but it would be great to see at least one other arts event of this scale each year in SoFA. I could totally see a Halloween costumed event in October or a Brazilian Carnival inspired event in February.

Scenes from SubZERO

Did you go to the SubZERO Festival? If not, you totally missed out. It was packed with art, music, local vendors, street performers and more. My husband and I got there around 6pm and didn't leave until close to midnight. We roamed up and down the street about three times; checking out local vendors, the tech-art projects, watching a performance… there was always something going on.

We grouped up with Josh and his wife (of TSJB) and hit up a few of the art galleries, had some dessert from Treatbot, and tasted the locally brewed beer from Strike.

Plus! Yay for community - we ran into so many people there! It was definitely the place to be. Do not miss out next year.

Photos of subZERO 2011

This is subZERO!  It was my first time being at subZERO and it was great, a night of art, music, food and friends.

For me it all started off early at 5p doing some behind the scenes photos for Trina Merry the body paint artist.  It was like a zoo, we had makeup artist, hairstylist, painters, models and dancers everywhere.  It was pretty hectic and I’m sure a logistics nightmare dealing with so many people but Dez did a great job of keeping everything moving forward.

In the end even I ended up helping to shuttle and escort the models/dancers everywhere before the show started.

Got some pre-show pictures of the Tahira: the Pure Dance Theatre.  Imani and Trina collaborated together to create an exhilarating mashup of living art.  Elizabeth, one of the living statues, looked great with her intricate hairstyle.  I was able to talk to James, the hair stylist, briefly and he came up with the style as a fusion of Victorian and Modernism.

Got a quickshot of Trina + Regard Tang, one of the Makeup Artist.

Not everything went according to plan, due the sound checks taking longer than expected but eventually the Black Lotus Fashion Show kicked off.  Most of the outfits were gothic in nature and fantastic.

Finally the Tahira Dance Troupe kicked off and it was brilliant!  Part of me wanted to just stop bothering with photos and watch them dance.

Afterwards, went to meetup with Josh and the others at the Single Barrel.  A massive line as always, but worth the wait.

We then went around to check out the rest of subZERO and although I was suppose to do more photos of the event I ended up taking photos of us instead.  I did get some fun photos of us, but the girls would beat me for posting them.

I still managed to get a few shots of what was going on.  The Disco Fish Mobile!

Here are the cosplay body paint models portraying DC comic book characters.   I actually drove Wonder Woman over, pushing the speed limit a few times to make it on time. =)

Luckily got some of the blacklight performers as well before the night ended.

To wind down the night we grabbed some food at the Mogo BBQ truck.  We hung out by the crub while waiting.  Now my question is, will she be towed for stopping?

Oh and I bet you’ve never thought of a massive Tofu Burrito before did you?  Well, the verdict is that it’s quite good.

It’ll have to be something I try next time since I got the tacos instead.  I have no picture of the tacos as I’m busy eating them, so here’s a picture of Josh eating his burrito to wrap things up.  (Get it? Burrito, wrap? haha)

You can check out the rest of the photos at the T2L site here.

PG_guieu_.jpg
66 South First St.: Defragmentation 66 by Michele Guieu
Defragmentation 66 is an adaptation of the last installation I’ve made in San Diego: Defragmentation: Rearranging Bits and Pieces of Memory. It is an ongoing project and the occasion to reflect on bits and pieces of my memories, as I am recalling/documenting them. The project originated when I was about to leave San Diego after living there for 6 years. I thought about the different times I’ve left a place in my life. Defragmentation 66 is the first installation I am showing in San Jose since I’ve moved and it represents a link between the two towns – and beyond. The installation is on a smaller scale but uses some essential elements featured in the first version of the show: an ensemble of paintings, a painted background and videos. The videos in Defragmentation 66 are new memories and were taken here, in the bay area. The address number where the show is held, 66, is an interesting symbol in my life: the first time I came to the US, that’s the road I travelled on.
Exhibit on view through August 30th. Visible 24/7 from the sidewalk.

Gianfranco_June2011.jpg
95 South Market St.: Roundels sculptures by Gianfranco Paolozzi

"I was looking in the recycle container full of paper from flexo printing presses.
That’s when I felt the passion again: round surfaces screaming to be used. I looked at them changing on the floor of my studio. I had to use my marks, my moments on the surfaces as a sign of me being there.
That’s when the roundels were born." ~Gianfranco
Exhibit on view through August 30th. Visible 24/7 from the sidewalk.

Then make your way over to the SoFA District for the monthly art walk and 4th Annual SubZERO Subculture Festival!

MORE ABOUT THE PERFORMERS ON KSCU / GFP STAGE:
The Glowing Stars:
http://theglowingstarsband.wordpress.com/
There are many chiptune artists, but not a lot of chiptune bands. The Glowing Stars — guitarist/vocalist Lizzie Cuevas and drummer/Game Boy synth programmer Matt Payne — combines the clicky waveforms and perfect arpeggios of 8-bit processors with the fury of live drums and distorted guitars. Influenced as much by Frank Zappa and Freddie Mercury as Mega Man and Metroid, the band’s wistfully emotional lyrics are more boy-meets-girl than Game-Boy-meets-end-boss. With customized game hardware sharing the stage with 100-watt half-stacks, The Glowing Stars are half Weezer, half Wario – in other words, utterly unique.
