Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park to Observe All Saint’s Day and Day of the Dead


Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park will host a Día de los Muertos event, a time deeply rooted in Hispanic tradition, to honor and remember loved ones who have departed. This celebration is free opportunity for families to come together, pay respects, and keep the memories of their loved ones alive. The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, featuring traditional music, food, dancers, and activities for children. The community is invited to contribute items to the altar (ofrenda) in remembrance of their loved ones.

 

This event is honoring the values of remembrance, respect for elders, and the important role that family plays in preserving the memories of those who came before us.

 

All are welcome, including members of the media, to join this important cultural event.

 

The day-long celebration will begin with a gathering for coffee, champurrado, and traditional Pan de Muerto from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

  • 10 – 11 a.m.: Celebration of Liturgy (Special Guest Speaker: Bishop Oscar Cantú)
  • 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.: Performance by Gabriele Sepulveda
  • 12 – 1 p.m.: Aztec Dancers
  • 1 – 2 p.m.: Folclorico Kids Club
  • 2 – 3 p.m.: Aztec Dancers
  • 3 – 5 p.m.: Musical Group

From Oct. 31 – Nov. 6, Oak Hills will have a community altar in the main lobby for the community to visit from sunrise to sunset. The community is invited to add a 5x7 photo of their loved one to the altar. Remembrance cards will also be available.

Dia de Los Muertos at the San Jose Museum of Art

The SJMA is hosting a full day of entertainment and art to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos on November 2nd. Some of the hands-on activities include decorating sculls, calavera portraits, and meditative weaving. There will also be a live performance by Lincoln High Mariachi at noon.

The event is free and runs from 11am-4pm at the San Jose Museum of Art in Downtown San Jose.

Dia de los Muertos San Jose

Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of life, family, and culture. San Jose's Dia San Jose Festival & Oldies Never Die Concert is a two day event featuring live music, food, and art. 

It takes place at Plaza de Cesar Chavez in Downtown San Jose on Friday, October 18th and Saturday, October 19th. You can find tickets and more information over here.

Signia by Hilton supporting local San Jose artists as part of Dia de los Muertos events

Signia by Hilton (former San Jose Fairmont) is getting into the Dia de los Muertos spirit with a two-week celebration from October 21st to November 4th built around three different events.

On October 21st the party starts at AJI Bar & Robata in the beautiful lounge in the middle of the hotel. Signia partnered with local artists to create a paper altar display, posters, and feature Aztec dancers, musicians, and face painters. There will be tequila and mezcal tastings in the lobby.

From Oct 21 to November 4th, the AJI Bar & Robata will feature a special menu of Mexican shared bites and new tequila and mezcal craft cocktails.

On October 27th they will have a costume party headlined by Chicana artis La Doña.

¡VivaFest! Announces 2014 Festival Season


Iconic artists, music and dance conference and free events;
New speaker’s series, online exhibition, Dia de los Muertos

San Jose, California, July 8, 2014 – The organizers of ¡VivaFest!, San Jose’s Latino destination festival, announced today its 2014 fall schedule. Appearances by Academy Award and Grammy Award winners Rita Moreno and Paul Williams and Grammy award nominees Jose Hernandez and Mariachi Sol de Mexico highlight the 2014 schedule which includes the festival’s annual mariachi music workshops, Gala mariachi concert, outdoor festivals, a speaker’s series and concert recitals in the folk music of Mexico. Many events, including the Gala mariachi concert, are free to the public this year.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

San Jose’s annual mariachi and ballet folklorico conference kicks off July 25, 2014 with an expanded schedule of mariachi and ballet folklorico workshops followed by a vibrant season of music and cultural events in San Jose. Mariachi workshops will be led by Jose Hernandez of Mariachi Sol de Mexico and dance workshops will be led by the award winning dance master artist Maria Luisa Colmenarez, founder of Danzantes Unidos, and master artist Jose Tena, Founder and Artistic Director of Ballet Folklorico de la Tierra del Encanto, and dance faculty at New Mexico State University and the Harvard University summer arts program. New this year to the work shop schedule is a class on the basics of coding for musicians offered by software engineer and master artist Juventino Mejia and a workshop on Jalisco harp offered by master artist William Faulkner.

July 30 - VivaFest presents “An Evening of the Music of Angels,” a concert recital by Jalisco Harp Maestro William Faulkner at the San Jose Women’s Club.

August 1, the festival annual mariachi gala event presents with Symphony Silicon Valley traditional icons Mariachi Sol de Mexico headlining “Songs in the Key of Mexico,” a free concert at San Jose State University.

September 14 the festival and Mundo Fox celebrate Mexican Independence Day at Discovery Meadow with a free day of family activities, music, food and fun.

September 16 VivaFest opens an online exhibition of “The Artistic Mestizaje,” an outdoor mural artwork by Carlos Perez in a project co-presented with the Google Art Institute. The exhibition will feature digital views of the mural taken by Google’s street team and an in-depth examination of the artistic heritage depicted by the artist in a panel discussion on the modern convergence of culture with the artist and curatorial staff from Google.

September 26, VivaFest and the Commonwealth Club of California present a conversation with Academy Award, Golden Globe and Grammy Award winner Paul Williams, at the Mayer Theatre in Santa Clara. Currently President of ASCAP, Williams’ recent work includes major Latino creative projects with Guillermo del Toro and a new book, “Gratitude and Trust: Six Affirmations That Will Change Your Life.”

October 17, 2014, VivaFest and the Commonwealth Club present a conversation with Latina icon Rita Moreno. Moreno is one of the few artists to win a Grammy, Oscar, Tony and Emmy awards and the National Medal of Honor. She continues to maintain a busy performing schedule and is the author of the recently published book, “Rita Moreno, A Memoir.“

On October 25, ¡VivaFest! and Milagro Marketing co-present Dia San Jose, three days of cultural events celebrating Mexico’s Dia de Los Muertos - a traditional celebration of heritage, family and ancestry at the San Jose City Hall Rotunda and St. James Park.

Artists for Fiestas Patrias and Dia San Jose will be announced later this summer.

Dia de Los Muertos in San Jose

Sunday, November 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.


San José, CA – October 19, 2011 --- It has become a tradition on All Saints Day to celebrate our ancestry, our forebearers who have passed on before us.  This year to commemorate Dìa de Los Muertos/Day of the Dead the festivities will again be held at Oak Hill Memorial Park with an outdoor mass on Sunday, November 6.

Oak Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park is Celebrating their 165th anniversary as California’s oldest secular cemetery. Oak Hill welcomes friends, family, neighbors and beyond to commemorate their 6th annual Dìa de Los Muertos, also known as All Souls’ Day or Day of the Dead, on Sunday, November 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The ceremony is dedicated to honor those friends and relatives that have passed away. An outdoor mass will be held at 10:30 AM. 

“It is an honor to invite everyone,” said Brian Kestenblatt, General Manager of Oak Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park “as we welcome, honor and celebrate the memories of our beloved souls. Join us for Mass as we rejoice and observe the mystical beauty and wonder of this ancient spiritual celebration.”

The Mass Service will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe section of Oak Hill Memorial Park, and will include the traditional sweet bread, coffee, champurrado, live music and ceremonial dances.

The custom of All Saints’ Day and Day of the Dead dates back to 600AD and is a custom that is preceded by Halloween or All Hallow’s Eve.  It has evolved into a ceremonial commemoration.
