Cinequest 2025: San Jose’s Film Fest Glows Bright This March

Hey, San Jose film fans—mark your calendars, because Cinequest is back, and it’s ready to light up downtown with its Luminate Film & Creativity Festival! Running March 11-23, 2025, this is the 35th year of one of Silicon Valley’s most iconic events, blending cutting-edge cinema, tech innovation, and that unmistakable SJ energy. If you’ve been craving a dose of creativity to shake off the winter blues, this is your spot.
This year’s theme, “Luminate,” promises to shine a spotlight on bold stories and fresh voices from around the globe. We’re talking over 200 films—think world premieres, U.S. debuts, and those hidden gems you won’t catch anywhere else. It’s all going down at some of downtown’s best venues: the stunning California Theatre, the always-vibrant Hammer Theatre Center, and the cozy 3Below Theaters & Lounge. Whether you’re a die-hard cinephile or just looking for a fun night out, there’s something here for you.
What makes Cinequest so special? It’s not just a film fest—it’s a vibe. Set right here in the heart of Silicon Valley, it’s where art meets innovation. Expect Q&A sessions with filmmakers, tech-forward panels (hello, AI in movies!), and maybe even a silent film with live organ music if they keep that tradition rolling. Plus, the festival’s famous Maverick Spirit Awards will honor some big names—last year it was Matthew Modine, so who’s next? Stay tuned!
The lineup and tickets are already live, so you can start planning your must-see screenings now. Head over to Cinequest’s official site to grab yours—pro tip: the All Access Pass is the move if you want VIP perks like express entry and party invites. Venues are spread across downtown, so you can make a whole day of it—hit a film, grab some eats at San Pedro Square Market, and soak in that SJ buzz.
Cinequest isn’t just a win for film lovers; it’s a boost for our city too. Tens of thousands of people flock here every year, filling up theaters, restaurants, and streets with excitement. It’s a reminder of why San Jose’s downtown scene is so unbeatable—world-class events with a local heart.
So, what’s your Cinequest plan? Are you chasing the next Oscar-worthy short or just here for the afterparties? Drop your thoughts in the comments—I’d love to hear what you’re hyped for. Let’s get ready to luminate San Jose this March!

A dreamy escape at The Tech Interactive: exploring the Dream Garden exhibit

San Jose’s very own Tech Interactive has rolled out a mesmerizing new exhibit that’s got locals buzzing. Nestled in the heart of downtown, right across from Plaza de César Chávez, this iconic museum has long been a go-to spot for tech lovers and curious minds alike. But their latest addition, Dream Garden, takes things to a whole new level, blending cutting-edge AI with an immersive, surreal experience that feels like stepping into a living painting. Launched recently, this exhibit is a must-see for anyone looking to spark their imagination while getting a front-row seat to the future of technology.
So, what’s Dream Garden all about? Picture this: you walk into a vibrant, ever-changing ecosystem that responds to your every move. Powered by artificial intelligence, the exhibit transforms your gestures and ideas into a dynamic landscape filled with whimsical creatures, towering trees, and floating elements that shift as you interact with them. It’s playful yet profound, inviting visitors of all ages to co-create a dreamlike world that feels uniquely personal. After soaking in the magic, you can peek behind the scenes to see how AI brings it all to life—a perfect mix of fun and education that’s quintessentially Tech Interactive.
What makes this exhibit stand out in a city already brimming with innovation is its accessibility and charm. Whether you’re an AI nerd or just someone who loves a good Instagram-worthy moment, Dream Garden delivers. It’s the kind of place where kids can giggle as they “teach” virtual creatures to fly, while adults marvel at the seamless integration of tech and creativity. Located on the lower level of the museum, it’s easy to pair with a visit to the IMAX Dome Theater or a hands-on robotics session, making for a full day of Silicon Valley-style adventure.
As of today, February 22, 2025, Dream Garden is still blooming at The Tech Interactive, and there’s no better time to check it out. Admission is included with your general ticket, so you can dive into this AI-powered wonderland without breaking the bank. If you’re a San Jose local (or just passing through), swing by and see why this exhibit is sparking wonder in the heart of our tech-savvy city. Who knows? You might just leave inspired to dream up something groundbreaking of your own.

What's there to do on a Tuesday night in Downtown San Jose?

I remember for years most people would say there is nothing to do in Downtown San Jose, period. Then as most realized weekends are almost all filled with activities and major events Downtown, the new mantra became there is nothing to do after work Downtown during the week.

Let's put aside the 300+ eateries, the SAP Center, Improv, Urban Putt, and the many venues open during the week. I had a look at the San Jose Downtown Association Newsletter, and today's featured events on a random Tuesday seemed like a pretty fun night out.

Sorry the links below aren't clickable, but you have Tequila Tuesday with 50% off tequila tastings and $3 tacos. Karaoke at the Caravan. Traditional Irish music at O'Flaherty's. An Open Mic at Mama Kin (great venue). Last but not least, you can cap off the night with DJs spinning Punk and Country at the Ritz until midnight. If that's not an eclectic mix of options for a Tuesday, I don't know what is.

Día de San Juan Salsa Fest on June 21

Yet another new music festival is coming to Downtown San Jose this weekend. The inaugural Día de San Juan Salsa Fest is a collaboration between San Jose Jazz (SJZ) and the nonprofit cultural organization MACLA.

The festival will feature three great regional bands: Latin Rhythm Boys, Orquesta Taino, and La Mixta Criolla. In addition to the live music there will be salsa dance lessons, a DJ, and of course food and drinks. It all goes down in Parque de Los Pobladores, across the street from MACLA in Downtown San Jose's artsy SoFA District.

The event is free and runs Friday, June 21st from 5-10pm.

Viva CalleSJ: SoFA to the Streets (San Jose's SoFA, SCC Fairgrounds, and Martial Cottle Park)

Viva CalleSJ is back for it's 1st event of the 2024! Miles of city streets will be completely shut down to let people walk, run, dance, bike, unicycle, skateboard, or hoverboard down the streets of San Jose.

SoFA to the Streets features three activity hubs which are festivals-within-a-festival that highlight the local area. This time the activity hubs will be SoFA, the SCC Fairgrounds, and Martial Cottle Park. You can expect live music, vendors, food, activities, bike parking, and good times at all of the hubs. In between the activity hubs you will still find all sorts of interesting stops, hydration stations, and stores.

A unique feature this time around is the route is a single line with no branches. It's crazy to think you can walk all the way from Martial Cottle Park on Branham Lane all the way to Downtown San Jose on city streets.

The event takes place on Sunday, April 21st from 10am to 3pm (streets are closed until 4pm). There is no beginning or end and the traffic flows in both directions. It's completely free and you can use the handy map below to locate the routes and festivities. For more info, head over here.

Eox & Nyx - meet Downtown San Jose's newest flagship restaurant and bar

The proprietors of Original Gravity (now Still O.G. and Alter Ego), Paper Plane, and Miniboss are stepping up to their most ambitious project yet. Eos & Nyx is a flagship two-story restaurant and bar in the former Camera 12 Space. This happens to be the same block where Urban Putt set up shop, so it's turning out to become quite the district.

Named after the ancient Greek goddess of day and night, they will serve traditional Mediterranean cuisine from France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and North Africa. Their executive chef is Nicko Moulinos who was raised in Greece and previously cooked at Le Bernardin (a 3 Michelin Star restaurant), Kwame Onwuachi's Kith/Kin, and Taverna. I'm sure their drink program will also be outstanding given this team's craft cocktail pedigree.

As for ambiance, the renders look incredible. We're talking 20-foot ceilings, lots of trees and plants, outdoor terrace seating, and a rotating conveyor belt of spirits that will be visible both inside and outside the restaurant. If Urban Putt was my #1 most anticipated opening of 2024, this is #2.

Eos & Nyx will open sometime during the summer at 201 South Second Street, Suite 120.

Urban Putt, a love letter to San Jose's past, present, and future

With anticipation building for over a year, I thought there was no way that Urban Putt could possibly live up to the expectations in my head. I was wrong. Best. Minigolf. Course. Ever.

You walk through a very subtle entrance at 201 S. Seconds St., right next to Scott's Seafood. As soon as you walk in you are immediately transported to another planet. If Urban Putt was a standalone bar, it would already be one of the best ones in San Jose. Specialty drinks include The Winchester Old Fashioned with a smoke bubble, 10th Street Penicillin using local San Jose-made whiskey, Steve's Espresso Martini (pictured below), and a fruity Happy Accident which you wear around your neck and take with you as you golf.

For food, I just sampled a small number of their menu items at the media preview night but have plans to return this weekend for "more thorough research." The Pad Thai pizza was super tasty, as was the street corn salsa and Bavarian Pretzel with locally produced IPA mustard. I'm looking forward to trying their OMG Burger, which is a smash-burger on Texas toast with avocado and a fried egg.

Okay now for the best part. The golf course is incredible. It puts any other course I have ever done to shame in terms of creativity, engineering, and localization. It starts with an homage to Downtown San Jose and then blends innovation with nostalgia. I don't even want to show all the photos so that you get to experience some surprises while you're there.

Some of the holes are actually races with your party of up to 4 people, including a game of labyrinth. One is a real-life game of Duck Hunt. Another is inside of the Winchester Mystery House. There's a shark, a downed UFO, a replica of the San Jose Electric Light Tower, a submarine, and a finale worthy of Silicon Valley. Some of the holes even have hidden tricks and easter eggs, including some trippy optical illusions and effects with vacuum tubes.

If there was ever a time to run out and support a new local business, this is it. I already have my next two trips lined up. Urban Putt officially opens to the public today at 4pm. After 8pm it will be 21+ only.

This has immediately become my top destination to take people from out of town. What a way to start 2024!

Urban Putt teaser

Tomorrow I'll have a full writeup, but for now here are a few teaser images to prove that Urban Putt is real. The summary is: this is the coolest place to open in Downtown San Jose since the San Pedro Square Market.

Latest news (and video) on Urban Putt - grand opening is later this week!

I know I'm promoting Urban Putt quite a bit, but I truly believe it is one of the most significant new businesses that I can remember in Downtown San Jose.

Every one of the holes in the indoor golf course is unique, hand-built, and essentially a tribute to San Jose. Yes, they even have a replica electrical light tower inside the building. The level of craftmanship is off the charts.

For a quick preview of several holes, there is a 4 minute video by NBC Bay Area here.

The Silicon Valley Business Journal also has a story up with 13 photos.

Last but not least, the Mercury News has their own article here.

I'll get a chance to preview it first-hand at the media preview tonight. I can't wait and am already planning my second and third visits.

The official grand opening is Thursday, Feb 29th and Urban Putt is located at 201 S. Second St. in the former Camera 12 building. Scott's Seafood is next door.
