More details on the Valley Fair expansion

We have been waiting a long time for the repeatedly-delayed Valley Fair expansion, but now plans are getting very real. Westfield has a video showcasing the massive 624,000 SQFT expansion. I can't give you a direct link or embed it, but all you have to do is go to this page, and scroll down to the middle of the page.

The official price tag will clock in at a whopping $1.1 billion. Given it is one of the most profitable retail centers in the world, I'm sure that investment will pay off.

The video starts off with a lot of nice things to say about us as consumers:

The heart of Silicon Valley
#1 Wealthiest Metropolitan Area in the U.S.
#1 Highest Median Home Value in U.S.
#1 Center for Technology and Innovation in the World
#1 Fastest Growing County in U.S.
Highest Concentration of Millionaires and Billionaires in the U.S.
Hyper Educated
Hyper Entrepreneurial

Then it goes into some of the details...

624,000 SQFT Expansion
Upscale Cinemas
150 New Retail Shops
New Flagship Bloominddails
Luxury Vallet and Elegant Outdoor Dining

And then you get the posh renders of what is being planned. I grabbed a few images from the video, but recommend watching it to get the full effect.

Huge thanks to Joe Meduri for sending this in!

  1. This investment is super awesome, I recommend watching the video for sure.

Why is BART extending to Santa Clara caltrain instead of Valley Fair? Put it on the Santa Clara side and call it a day. I now live in Oakland, but I'd love to lobby support or petition whoever to get that idea on the floor.

  2. Combined with Santana Row (Valley Fair will build a nicer walkway to connect the two) the total square footage for retail would be around 2.7 million square feet. This would make it one of the largest retail centers in the world. This shows the power of the wealth of Silicon Valley. This will be the biggest attraction in San Jose (of course, without changing the address as it is this will all be listed as being in Santa Clara when 90% of the building space will be in San Jose).

    1. As long as we continue to get 90% of the tax dollars, it is not the end of the world =). I would love to have the address changed at some point, but it is all branding. We do have Santana Row 100% in San Jose, and I think that is a more significant landmark and brand even with the expansion.

    2. It's a huge missed opportunity that San Jose doesn't even put up a fight for. San Jose needs all the positive marketing it can get as it tries to live up to it's status as 10th largest city in the U.S. But even when we have something good, like Valley Fair, we let a smaller city take all the glory. I can't wait for all the press spots when this is finished and they gush over all the new luxury stores "Live from Santa Clara, back to you in the studio" San Jose, always getting the short end of the stick.
