Coding Dojo Moves to San Jose

Coding Dojo is a computer programming boot camp that turns people into coders in just 3-4 months. They have recently moved their HQ from Mountain View to a larger and more modern space in North San Jose (1982 Zanker Road). Due to high demand, they are also hoping to open a second San Jose location in the next couple months.

In addition to the new digs, Coding Dojo has pledged to increase both female and minority enrollment. They have already gotten their female enrollment up from 10-15% to 25-30% in just the last six months.

The standard 12-week classes have 25-35 student "cohorts" and cost between $10,500 and $12,500. That sounds like a bargain compared to the astronomical salaries you can rack up in the tech world.

  1. To be honest I think increasing minority enrollment will be a challenge, in part the demographic group tends to be more likely to be transit dependent, and so any location that the subset that is transit dependent can actually go to would end up having to be close to a lot of bus lines or light rail lines, VTA is not very well set up so the only places that come to mind that would fit the bill would be within a few blocks of the transit center in San Jose, I'm sure other transit center can sort of work, but if you're talking about the local population you probably need to be accessible from East San Jose.

I don't mean to generalize here, I'm part of a minority group, and I work in technology, and have a car (and a bike), but I'm saying if you want to increase minority enrollment, you have to figure out what issues affect their enrollment and address that, and I believe transit is one of those issues.

  2. Is this the same as the Hacker Dojo of Mountain View?

  3. I think people will forego traditional school environments for boot camps like this in the upcoming future.

  4. I think this is a significant development, to move from Mountain View to San Jose... echoing the broader trend of re-occupying space in North San Jose that is happening right now.

Regarding Cardinal2007's point about transit access being an obstacle, the current site (1982 Zanker) is within 2/3 mile of a light rail station. It's actually pretty centrally located in San Jose, even in relation to East SJ neighborhoods. I think the bigger question is why the Dojo chose to locate on Zanker Road rather than in downtown or close to it.
