Wednesday Wishlist: 2024 Bay Area Olympics

San Francisco has officially put in a bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics  at an estimated budget of $4.5 billion. However, given SF does not have the resources or space to host this alone, the plan includes utilizing facilities all around the Bay Area including Levi's Stadium and Avaya Stadium (the new Earthquakes Stadium). So in a nutshell, SF would take on all of the risk and financial costs while San Jose would benefit from locally hosted events, economic impacts, and having easy access to all Summer Olympic games. It sounds like a win to me, similar to having Levi's stadium in Santa Clara.

What would you guys think about a 2024 Bay Area Olympics?

  1. San Jose is acting like the biggest suburb in America! If events are down here it should be a shared title. I thought the plan to host the Super Bowl was presented by a Santa Clara group and pow! a Super Bowl in SF....all official events in SF...you could throw a rock from the stadium and it would land in SJ. Time to grow up or change the city slogan from the "Capitol of Silicon Valley" to "The largest suburb around San Francisco"

  2. Stop being a suburb, San Jose and act like a respected city!!!!! If San Jose is a host city for Olympic, which is winnable, I would support it. No Frisco nonsense, please!

  3. Sure SF's just going to pay for it all and let the other cities reap the rewards. Ain't gonna happen. If the bid goes anywhere I fully expect the team leading the bid to start approaching other cities to kick in in exchange for hosting events there.

I'm all for SF footing the whole bill but that's simply never going to happen if events are to be held elsewhere.

  4. I'm all for it IF we get the complete BART extension from South Bay up the peninsula to downtown SF. Otherwise, it'll be a colossal waste of time & money.

    1. Amen, we need to complete BART around the bay!

    2. People need to get this out of their minds. It's NEVER going to happen. Caltrain already serves that route well enough and will get better with electrification (which is probably 1/4 to 1/3 cheaper than trying to build BART).

  5. Colossal waste of money! Do a web search on other cities that have recently hosted the Olympics. On top of the financial facts, I just can't imagine our public transportation infrastructure and horrid traffic in the Southbay being suitable to handle the influx of people the Olympics would bring. Bad idea in my opinion.

I doubt many residents living within a few mile of Levi's stadium would agree with this statement. I don't even live anywhere close to it and see how the problems with traffic, noise and inconvenience far outweigh the local benefits. I don't see any real solutions coming anytime soon.

    1. I can walk to Levi's stadium, and couldn't disagree more. Noise is minimal (if any) and far less than the planes flying overhead. Traffic is restricted primarily to Tasman and limited parts of 237. On the flipside you have easy access to world class events and eventually a restaurant and retail destination.
