New $35M Hotel Project in North San Jose

Remember the old Piercey Toyota lot on North First near the airport? That is about to become not one, but two hotels. On the table is a 145-room Hampton Inn and Suites as well as a 140-room Home2 Suites. Unlike the SpringHill Suites and Residence Inn project also happening near the airport, each of these hotels will be housed in a separate building. However, I would be surprised if they did not share some of their resources and staff since the owner is going to be the same (Kalthia Group Hotels).

I know some of the urbanists that frequent this site will not be impressed with five-story buildings, especially along North First where we could theoretically go beyond 30. Personally, I'll take it over an empty parking lot any day of the week. North First seems under-serviced by hotels, and we need these resources to help entice more large companies to the area.

  1. Well....you know me, I'm all for a more humane, livable urban environment, re: no towers. So your news makes one urbanist happy. ;)

  2. WTF. when will San Jose start looking like Silicon Valley? This looks like something from Modesto. this "off the shelf " design is all about greed they don't want to pay an architect for any new ideas.

  3. Anon #2. This is practically how ALL of Silicon Valley looks like, dear. Maybe you're a transplant? But I think I know what you mean to say, that "when will San Jose live up to its Capital of Silicon Valley billing?"

On another note, ugly design! At least they're only 5 stories so we can bulldoze them in the future.

  4. Pretty bland at first glance IMO. I remember when the auto dealership moved ... it's got to be at least 3 years ago now. At that time I remember reading about how the loss of auto dealership's really hurts the city (loss of tax revenue). Hopefully, the hotels can contribute (and perhaps redesign the project too :)).

  5. Hopefully they'll go ahead and get rid of the (SL)EZ8 next door while they're at it.

  6. Not all projects have to have innovative designs, these are business traveler oriented hotels and are pretty utilitarian...so it's okay in my book. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Bay 101 folks come up with for their proposed hotel(s) since I'm sure the want to have something attractive/innovative to differentiate themselves from M8trix.

  7. Agree with #2 poster, absolutely atrocious. There is a hotel in (perhaps) in Fremont, off of 880 with this same look. This is just the recycling of another bad design for this City. I guess we should be used to this. And is our Mayor waiving taxes and fees to encourage this atrocity?
