Silicon Valley (Santa Clara and San Jose) Hosting WrestleMania 31 in 2015

Levi's Stadium has landed yet another huge event, and San Jose will be one of the key benefactors. WrestleMania is from what I understand like the Super Bowl of wrestling events. The last one completely sold out the MetLife Stadium in New York (2nd photo below), generated $100 million in economic impact for the host area, and over one million people purchased it on pay-per-view. While I was not one of those people, I greatly appreciate the fact that the new stadium is bringing WrestelMania 31 to the area in 2015.

How exactly will San Jose benefit? WrestleMania Axxess--a four day interactive fan festival--will take place at the San Jose Convention Center. The 2015 WWE Hall of Fame Induction will be at the SAP Center, as will the Monday Night Raw event. Other parties and events will likely also be held in the Downtown San Jose area, which make perfect sense given it's just a quick Lightrail or Amtrak ride away. Visitors will most likely be flying in via San Jose International and I bet quite a few extra hotel rooms will be booked Downtown or along North First specifically for this event.

WrestleMania 31 goes down on Sunday, March 29, 2015. I hope we'll see many more big events like this at the Stadium where there is a direct positive impact to San Jose.

  2. Love your optimism tony, but it aint happening. no reason for them to change names. the current set up allows the team to carry the prestigious San Francisco name while tapping into silicon valley money. best of both worlds. as for wrestlemania, is it confirmed by WWE that the host site is 'Silicon Valley' or Frisco? My bet is, just like the super bowl, this will be pimped as a Frisco event ("Live from Levis Stadium in San Francisco, Welcome to WrestleMania 31)

    1. Prestigious? Give me a break! If that was the cae all Bay Area teams, including the Sharks, would have the Frisco name. I say very good chance they become either the SJ or Silicon Valley 49ers in the future. Why should the city of Frisco, which didn't do crap for the Niners, get all of Silicon Valley's glory?

    2. "Frisco"? Really?

    3. Yes, "Frisco." Jesus F'ing Christ, can SF people grow a pair and get over their hang-up with that nickname? Complaining only encourages the rest of us to use it.

    4. Derrick is an obvious transplant. LOL, any native Bay Areans wouldn't give two sh*ts about using "Frisco" in place of SF or "San Ho" in place of SJ.

  3. Agree that a name change is unlikely, but that doesn't mean that I won't call them the San Jose or Santa Clara 49ers =). Also the WWE event will have "Silicon Valley" as the host site, not SF.

  4. Tony, im on your side brutha! I would love for them to be San Jose 49ers or hell, even Silicon Valley or Santa Clara. I just dont think it will happen or needs to happen. Theres just too much history behind the San Francisco 49ers. Just like The Cowboys will never be The Arlington Cowboys. Now if Levis were located in SJ city limits, now we re talking! SJ would most certainly make them change their name as part of the deal. But, SC bent over backwards for them and here we are. Good to know that its a Silicon Valley WrestleMania and not a Frisco one, thanks Josh!

    1. Glad you're on my side ;). Respectfully, don't think you can compare Arlington to San Jose/Silicon Valley in terms of population. If Arlington were a city of 1 million the Cowboys would take their name easily. I would even go with a regional name, such as "New England" for Patriots (not Boston) and "Texas" for the Rangers (not Dallas). Your SILICON VALLEY 49ERS!

  5. Visitors might stay downtown but I highly doubt they will take public transit. I wonder how many people even know about light rail and amtrak...

    1. I think the word will get out quick. Lightrail makes for an easy connection between Downtown and the stadium, which is flanked by not one but two Lightrail stations. The ACE/Capital Corridor option will likely be more of a secret, but it will be faster and there is a car with a bar in it.

    2. Yes Josh! Folks I know who are Niners fans talk up the Light-Rail connection a lot. I'd imagine DSJ will become a "park and ride" for a lot of folks attending Levi's Stadium events. I'm a Raiders fan (yes, we still exist), but I can appreciate how SJ will benefit with the Niners in town.

  6. Don't watch wrestling, but this is definitely a win for the South Bay.
