The Farmers Union is Opening June 28th!

After sitting vacant since Agave Viejo closed three years ago, the flagship retail space at the corner of San Pedro and Santa Clara is about to burst back to life as The Farmers Union. The restaurant and bar will clock in at 7,000 SQFT, have 60 beers on tap (mostly the craft brew variety), encompass two stories, and be filled with historic photos from San Jose's past. The targeted opening date is next Friday, June 28th. This is a key space to activate since it will welcome visitors to San Pedro Square and is across the street from the new One South high-rise that recently broke ground.

I've said it a dozen times, but I'll say it again... 2013 is going to be a great year for Downtown San Jose!

  4. Wow, Blackbird and Farmers Union on the same day. Now we just need to get ISO: Beers open and San Jose will be a craft beer lover's dream.

    1. I just got news from O'flaherty's that they are going to have 54 taps up and running (mostly with craft beer) in early July. They are also going to do an event where for 90min all draft beers are $1. Good time to be a beer fan in San Jose.

    2. Also if you haven't been to the Market Beer Co. at the San Pedro Square Market, you have to check it out!

    3. Joshua,

Thanks for the good news about O'flaherty's. They've been gradually improving their craft beer presence over that past year or so. It seems like there is a competition going on to see who can have the most taps.

Market Beer Company is great, as well as Original Gravity and Good Karma.

  5. Awesome! Walking distance from home and another big space filled. Pictures look amazing and the menu should keep people coming. San Pedro square area is more hot than the San Fernando/1st/2nd area now with places to go, eat, spend time/events. If we could just get retail in there (it's coming in the new Centerra condo tower -- but that is 2yrs out) this North End of town will establish itself much more formally as a destination zone.

  6. Awesome. This place should do well, at least hopefully better than the last few tenants. I'm almost beginning to worry that this might be too much, too fast. Namely, will there be enough parking, too many similar businesses resulting in cannibalization of customers from one business to another, etc? However, things could be worse. Glad to see more private investors wanting to get a piece of the DTSJ pie.

  7. I share some of the same apprehensions as Chris about whether these new businesses are a little too similar so they may cannibalize each other's customers. I certainly hope we're wrong. But if these businesses have trouble, I do NOT think it will be for lack of parking. There is plenty - I repeat, plenty - of parking in downtown San Jose. Anyone who knows their way around can almost always find a free spot near their destination, any time of day. And those who aren't as familiar can follow the big signs to the numerous public parking garages and lots where parking is not free, but only costs a few dollars. Look at an aerial view of downtown San Jose and pick out all the parking - lack of it is NOT one of downtown's problems.

  8. Looks like they're pushing back the opening to July 12 (according to Facebook).

  9. There's a new restaurant casuality: Sante Grill has closed (as per Sal Pizarro on twitter).

    1. Doh, I really liked that place but never saw many people in there. They had a pretty unique menu, definitely a shame.

Well it can't all be good news. At least we have Blackbird Tavern, The Farmer's Union, and a mini SPSM in SoFA to make up for it.

    2. Apparently a new pizza place (San Jose Pizza Co.) will be replacing it. Really encouraging to see prime spaces fill up quickly.
