Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market Coming to San Jose

A Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market sounds almost like an oxymoron, but that is exactly what is coming to San Jose later this year. The former Safeway location in Westgate mall will be home to the first Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in the Bay Area. It's essentially a 38,000sqft grocery-only Wal-Mart. Supposedly, they are also eyeing the former Lunardi's location in Evergreen Village Square for their second store. The Evergreen Village Square space has been vacant far too long, I would be happy with anything in that space.

  1. My thought exactly...as well as the past few "news" about some companies getting funding. Guess there just isn't much going on in a city of 1 million people.

  2. Last night was the launch of SPUR San Jose, and urban planning advocacy group. There was a large event at the San Pedro Square Market. Read about the organization here: http://www.spur.org/sanjose

  4. There's lots of news in San Jose, not a lot of time to post about it. For complete coverage, read something like the Merc or San Jose Business Journal.

  5. Also San Jose companies getting funded is important. That will drive our economy in the near future. Also if you are job hunting, these are good companies to contact.

  6. Haters gonna hate, Josh.

Ugh, Walmart. DIAF. I'm really not looking forward to the one opening in Almaden either. We don't need one in the area. It's such bs.

  7. It's not hate, its quality of content and a commitment to what you are doing. You can tell Josh is busy and focused elsewhere based on what is getting posted of late.

  8. Well I heard the story on KGO, and it on on CBS and in the Merc. It's news. This is news in LA and San Diego too. Why is it not good enough for San Jose?

  9. Josh,
Could you confirm a possible market at the former Lunardis site in Evergreen. Our townhome is two blocks from the village.

  12. Walmart at Evergreen to replace the former Lunardi's in Evergreen?
That's like replacing a jewel with glass and paste. Lunardi's was wonderful and whoever is making the decisions concerning that space should have bent over backwards to have kept Lunardi's. I can already feel the value of the surrounding homes drop.

  13. As for Walmart, creating jobs - sure it creates 90 jobs here, but what about the people at the Farmer's market? How many jobs do they lose? How about the local producers? Just saying "creating 90 jobs" is not enough - you have to see how many jobs were lost to create those 90 jobs.

    No to Walmart!

    1. Nice! For sure it is 1000 times better than an empty space, especially in a project as neat as the evergreen village.

  16. Yeah, unless you're a home owner in the area. I believe the surrounding neighborhoods will have a huge value drop with a giant Walmart in the area. There will be tons of people that travel from all over the city to go there. Great, more traffic trying to get up Aborn to get home.

    1. It's a tiny Walmart focused on groceries, not a normal Walmart.

  17. With their out of this world pricing, Lunardi's could not compete leaving a void since 2007. Flush with cash, Walmart (WMT), non-union, paying minimum wage, which, in my opinion, is WAGE THEFT, is "better than nothing", I suppose.
