Say Hello to 669

Unfortunately we have run out of the number which has become synonymous with Silicon Valley, 408. Last week regulators approved a new 669 area code for the South Bay to kick in next year. The means that starting October 2012, everyone will have to dial a prefix of 1-408 to call 408 numbers, even if you are dialing from a 408 number. In November 2012, ALL new South Bay numbers will have a 669 area code. So how do you all feel about the change?

  1. Wasn't the 650 code actually spun off from the 408?

  2. I thought the same thing, but it doesn't look like that was the case based on wikipedia.

  3. When I used to reside in San Mateo, my 415 number became 650.

  4. Ah, so they combined some of 415 (San Mateo, etc) with some of 408 (Mountainview, Palo Alto (I think), etc.).

  5. Sad ... Will it be a cohesive geographic area? Will any current 408 numbers turn?

  6. It seems to me no numbers will change, but new numbers will have the new area code applied, and since all of the numbers will be in the same area, local numbers will be treated as long distance numbers (ergo, an area code must precede the dialed number even if the area code is the same).
