Convention Center Bonds Sold

The long overdue convention center expansion project is finally going to happen. $138.4 million in bonds were sold last Friday, which means the city has the cash in hand needed to start construction immediately.

The expansion will require demolishing the old MLK Main Library and adding 125,000sqft of convention and meeting space that will front San Carlos Street. Also in the plans are a general face-lift and modernization for the rest of the center. For more info, click here.

  1. that's a pretty important structure and needs to be done right. it's an opportunity to build something great.

where are the architectural drawings? when did any kind of meeting happen with the public for community input? does anyone know what this is gonna look like? why does this stuff always seem to get rammed through?

  2. I hope the picture isn't what its going to look like. If it is, they have made something even uglier than the Bathroom Tile Wall, which I thought would have been impossible, until now.

  3. Please tear down that ugly tile mural. I'll bring a hammer myself and start the demo!

  5. It was looking iconic when it was first designed a few years back, but alas it has been chipped away as the pricetag has gone down. I do agree: at the least they should do something about that hideous tile mural and better landscape the entry courtyard.

  6. Looks good to me. Most convention centers are pretty darn boring structures. This one has some nice modern architectural features.

    Good luck San Jose!
