Wednesday Wishlist: For a New High-rise to Break Ground

Any of them... I'm not picky at this point. San Jose is expected to have the largest increase in real estate values for 2011 (more on that another day), now's the time to put the shovels in the ground!

  1. San Jose real estate value is not going up. Our brand new condo has lost over $100K value since we bought it two years ago.

Again, I don't know why you keep wishing for more high rises when what exists is a failure. I don't mean this in a mean way, but I honestly wonder what your agenda is.

  2. My only agenda is to see the city grow, bring greater density downtown, and one day have a more respectable skyline. Don't worry, your condo will go back up in value over the next couple of years... maybe not the full 100k but it'll move in the right direction.

  3. I agree with Joshua, the Axis is finally filling in and soon the 360 will begin leasing. I would actually like to see more high rise apartments in San Jose. Most big cities have high rise rentals, not everything building has to be sold as condos. Let's go up!!!

  4. Ditto on Josh's comment. I own a salon downtown and am opening up a wine bar. The salon is almost 2 yrs old and we've seen a steady increase in sales, so things are heading in the right direction!

  5. Our two year old condo at Axis has retained its value. Perhaps the first poster should have chosen a better building.

  6. My condo in Mountain View is down 250K in 2 years, so its happening all over. If we haven't bottomed out yet, we soon will. Stick it out long enough and you will see that 100K, plus some. back.

  7. With all this enthusiasm surrounding downtown san jose on this blog I'd like for us to play devils advocate once in a while to make sure we're not getting too carried away.

How about doing a comparison with downtown Oakland in one post for eg? Except for perceptions of crime it seems downtown Oakland is further along than DTSJ. True?

  8. Downtown Oakland is further along where?

  9. I'm the first poster.

I am skeptical but since everyone is so hopeful I'll put one leg into the hope wagon (will let you know when/if I'm fully in).

For anonimity's sake, I don't want to reveal the condo's name. Let's say it's a smaller, spanking new complex that completely sold out. There have been foreclosures in it that have contributed to the fall of the market price, but that's one factor.

I wonder what the poster that said I needed to have gotten a better place meant. If I had the "money" the poster snobbily suggests I should have, then I probably would live elsewhere (it's quite pricey as is...as you well know, prices that would allow you a BIG home in more rural CA, let alone the rest of the country). Where do you live, aka "better condo" man or woman?

  10. Let me be clear: my home in downtown SJ cost nearly $500,000. And I love it. By living elsewhere if I had "serious" money i meant SF.

  11. Which proposed high rise would people like to see built first? Personally, I would like it to be the Park View towers with the church renovation. I can't wait to see the church redone and I think the towers would add to the skyline.

  12. Is that map up-to-date? San Pedro is red - didn't it get approved recently? It would also be nice to have a color code indicating what each of the colors mean.

  13. What happened to City Front Square?

  14. Here's a link to the map he used. It hasn't been updated in awhile. City Front has been canceled due to developers not being able to build as high as they wanted because of height restrictions from the airplanes. http://sjhighrise.shorturl.com/

  15. Josh/Mark, could you update the map to reflect the current state of affairs? Would be nice to see whats on the table, which ones fell through and how many new ones we have since the map was lasted updated.

  16. towers? he he... you know these things are gonna be 20 floors or under, right?

  17. One was supposed to be 23 stories and over 300ft. The further east these are built the higher they can go.

The map definitely needs to be updated. I'm waiting for any project to get approved to overhaul the map. For now, it's interesting to see what was planning and what could happen when the economy picks up.

  18. Is there any update on this project Josh?

    1. Not that I'm aware of. But with the two new KT properties towers, I'm not going to complain.
