@First Reveals Planned Eateries!

The @First development at 237 and First St. in North San Jose is anchored by a high-end Target which (opened in October) and Brocade's new international headquarters. It is also getting 80,000 sqft of retail, mostly for restaurants! Unfortunately, many of the restaurants area already available in either the San Jose Market Center off Coleman, or nearby. Here is the list:

  • Panda Express (also in SJ Market Center, tons in SJ)
  • Sweet Tomatoes (also in SJ Market Center, but glad to have a second in SJ)
  • Chipotle (already one on 1st St.)
  • Panera (also in SJ Market Center)
  • Premier Pizza (all 3 of their existing locations are within a couple miles)
  • Five guys burgers and Fries (only one in the area and it's in South SJ, this is a welcome addition)
  • Chick-fil-A (the only restaurant so far that is "New" to San Jose)

There is also a 160 room Hotel Sierra that will open next month, Union Bank will also likely sign a lease, and they are also looking for a grocery sub-anchor... potentially Fresh & Easy. In addition, they are looking for a dry cleaner, hair salon, and dentist. I hope they can make some space for a couple unique retailers that will add something new to the city.

  1. Oooh, the burger place sounds interesting. Does this new shopping area have a new parking garage too???

  2. There is a huge 5 or 6 story parking garage for Brocade, so hopefully non-employees will be able to access it after business hours and on weekends.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Sounds like an over hyped strip mall to me... Couldn't they have come up with some more unique and original restaurants? You can find just about all of them at any old mall.

  4. Let's get a quality and affordable dry cleaner in there! I work right next door at Wyse. It'll be nice to not have to drive across town to get my clothes cleaned.

In regards to the restaurants - I think everyone should keep in mind that this retail center is mostly surrounded by large businesses such as Cisco and Brocade. I think most of their revenue will be from nearby employees eating lunch not people taking dates out for dinner.

  5. Not necessarily talking about a "take a date out type of place." Just something unique and with character instead of the same cookie cutter places. A great example would be California Sourdough. They're a lunch-only spot that usually has a massive line out the door at all times. They have mind blowing sourdough sandwiches that you'll never find in a chain restaurant. Some other examples would be Falafel Drive In, The Mmoon, A Taste of Paris, Chez Sovan, and many many others.

I'm sure Cisco and Brocade employee's would appreciate a killer place like that nearby, and it would draw other people to the area. And if they are going to go with standard national chains, they should at least try to get some that aren't already available within 5 miles (all but 2 on the list are).

  6. How about a Trader Joe's there, if someone on the approving board is watching the comments on this page ?

    ReplyDelete
  7. As some one who used to live off Chick-fil-A in college, I am very excited to see that they have ventured out here to the west coast. I agree, it would be cool to see new and interesting eateries, you can only have Chipotle for lunch so many times.

    ReplyDelete
  8. There is actually a Chick-Fil-A up in Sacramento area. Maybe two, I forget now.

But getting one in San Jose is going to be awesome. Can't wait for it to open.

    ReplyDelete
  9. when is chick fil a going to open??? i have been craving it ever since I've seen this post...

    ReplyDelete
  10. This is awesome! Finally a Chick Fil A in the South Bay!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I was also hoping for a 24-hr fitness. It doesn't have to be huge but something nearby would be great.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Trader Joes would be great in this area.
I am happy to hear that Chipotle is coming.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Trader Joes would be so awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  14. This would be an ideal location for Trader Joe's!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I want a Trader Joe's!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I vote for a Trader Joes too!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I thought a Trader Joes was going up! A few of my buddies at Brocade said they seen a few notices on boards several months back but recently pulled them down? Maybe a change of plans?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Trader Joes please !!!!!Lot of us agree it ...

    ReplyDelete
  19. I totally agree with Tader Joe's.. Lot of houses and company around ..

    ReplyDelete
  20. The Planning Dept has very little to say about which retailers will move in... its about which retailers want to be there.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I really want to have 24-hr fitness over there!!! Trader Joe sounds good and Whole foods is welcome.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes to trader Joes!

    ReplyDelete
  23. It doesn't matter that some of these restaurants are also in the SJ Market Center. For people who live near @First, the SJ Market Center is too far.

Trader Joe's would be awesome in this location.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Trader Joe's would be awesome!

How do we get Trader Joe's to open here? Hope someone in the retail development team is approaching them in the first place. We could also petition Trader Joe's to open here.

  25. Trader Joes Please!!!!

  26. Fresh & Easy according to the website for the leasing company (Terranomics)

  27. Trader Joe's would be awesome!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. when will these places be opening?

    ReplyDelete
  29. They should be opening throughout this year. I think it will be late summer before you see the first one open.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What about a gas station in this area????

    ReplyDelete
  31. A gas station or a nice trendy bar thats not dark and super loud would be nice. I think the bar with a happy hour would do well with all these corporate headquarters in the area.

    ReplyDelete
  32. There's a huge gas station 2 exits down 237 on Lafayette.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Premier Pizza do serve as a bar at both Rivermark & River Oaks locations. Their pizza is not too bad either!

Go in the other direction to McCarthey Ranch and there is a gas station there too.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Trader Joe or Whole Foods would be great. I'm happy about Chipotle, Panera, & Sweet Tomatoes though!

    ReplyDelete
  35. TRADER JOE'S PLEASE!

Also, a GAS STATION!! Anyone else feel like there is a lack of gas stations in our area of North First and Zanker?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I would love a Trader Joes! And I totally agree Kara, we need some gas stations around here!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Premier pizza serves beer, but they are not a bar.

There is NO gas station at Lafayette and 237.

This is an over-hyped strip mall, with typical cookie-cutter, boring chain restaurants. Panda Express? With so much GOOD Chinese around, who would go there? Chipotle? I'd rather go to one of the many taquerias just down the road in Milpitas-- better and cheaper.

There just isn't much appeal to this place. They might do OK for lunch with the businesses around, but mainly because they are close, not because they are good.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sorry, I meant the gas station is at the Great America exit, which is just 500 feet away from the Lafayette exit.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Good grief...what kind of cars are you folks driving? Hummers & huge SUV's presumably! There are gas stations everywhere...North 1st, Great America, McCarthy near the Ranch 99. We don't need any more!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Trader Joes and a gas station would be great. There isnt a gas station close without having to get on the freeway...as far as a bar goes Hotel Sierra has the H-bar which is awesome! Great staff, great drinks and excellent seating and surroundings!

    ReplyDelete
  41. The H-bar, huh...thanks for the tip!

    ReplyDelete
  42. There should be a jamba juice, not only are there businesses there but also a mobile home park right across the street and down the street. It would be nice to have something like jamba juice, because there's not many at hand.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I heard now there is a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf too...first in San Jose!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Excited for the Chick-Fil-A!! ... wouldn't that be amazing if a Boiling Crab was built here! The other two are kinda far, from me (milpitas)

    ReplyDelete
  45. The Panda Express is open now which is kinda funny because the construction is still on-going (they haven't even started on some buildings yet). I also read that Pasta Pomodoro is going in there.

    ReplyDelete
  46. PLEASE!!!! LIKE OTHERS HAVE SAID. WE NEED A GAS STATION AROUND THAT AREA. WOULD BE BEST ON THE CORNER OF ZANKER AND TASMAN.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Trader Joes or Whole Foods please!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Panda Express, Chipotle, Five Guys Burger is open now. Sweet Tomato looks like it will open soon.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I was there yesterday, actually looks pretty nice. I like the indoor/outdoor courtyard between Five Guys and Chipotle. It's turning out better than what I expected.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Totally agree Joshua...I was pleasantly surprised as well. The outdoor eating area is cool (it has heating too for the winter). I've eaten there twice already and they all seem to be doing well (customer-wise that is). It's well overdue for that area IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Since I live in the area, I was following this development when they first proposed it. One thing I remember was that the developers stated publically that they were going to pay particular attention to the overall landscaping (look-and-feel basically) of the center. This actually made me laugh because the implication (reading between the lines) was that developers usually don't give a damn about that aesthetic stuff...they just build as quickly and cheaply as they can!

    ReplyDelete
  52. does anyone know when the other restaurants are opening?

    ReplyDelete
  53. What's the latest on Chick-fil-a?

Also, I see a JP Pizza.. Never heard of it. Anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Chick-fil-a still coming. Where did you find JP Pizza? I'm pretty sure it is a Premier Pizza going there.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Sorry I'm just replying.. for some reason, I'm not getting emails when someone writes on here. Will have to check it out why it stopped.

Anyways, there's a sign on the outside that says "JPs". The same building as the Union Bank.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I noticed that too last time I was there. Either it is the same owners and they are changing their name/concept up a bit, or Premier Pizza was replaced by JP.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Looks like Sweet Tomatoes is getting closer and closer to being finished. Anyone know the grand opening date?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Have checked out Chic Fil A's website and there is no mention of them opening in San Jose.
Tried their chicken sandwich in North Carolina last year and loved it.
We even made a side trip to Fairfield to have lunch on our way back from Clear Lake.
There are two locations near Travis AFB.
    Their shakes are awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Chic Fil A rocks! I will be so disappointed if it doesn't pop up there.

    Sadly, they are closed Sundays.

    ReplyDelete
  60. OPENING DATE for SWEET TOMATOES: 10/17/2011

    ReplyDelete
  61. Awesome, great news. I also see the Panera sign was put up.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Just found out via manager the sweet tomatoes will not opwn until November 1

    ReplyDelete
  63. I found that out yesterday as well =)

However, it turns out that Panera DID open yesterday on the 17th.

    ReplyDelete
  64. @joshua santos, are you in charge of replying to commenters? Just curious.

..anywho, I posted a comment and seems as if someone deleted it. I ASKED how do we apply to businesses before they open IF on their own sites, this location isn't listed.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'll respond to as many comments as I can.

Not quite sure how you would apply if they aren't listed online, but a safe bet would be hitting up the places in person and asking.

    ReplyDelete
  66. @joshua santos Cool you replied! Thanks.

Im always in that plaza almost 2x a wk, figured I need a job and I love the location.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Panera opened up this past week and it's amazing. I've never seen so much effort on an outside dining area (at a Bakery that is). There are comfortable chairs, heat lamps and an outdoor fireplace.

    ReplyDelete
  68. @joshua santos when is chik fil a opening?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Unfortunately I don't think it is opening there anymore :/ They are focusing more on the LA area.

    ReplyDelete
  70. That's the most disappointing news I've heard in a very, very long time!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Sweet Tomatoes is now open!

Not sure Premier Pizza is going to open though. There is a diff pizza place coming in. I think it is called JP's pizza.

Doing some research on Chick Fil-A...

    ReplyDelete
  72. Jp's is the same owners as Premier Pizza. Just a different name and product will be changed up a bit. Cant wait!! Im sure if you love Premier we will love this place too.

    ReplyDelete
  73. JP's open 1st week of January, 2012 (sign on front). It's definately the same owners as Premier ... I saw the Premier trucks out front last time I was there (I love that Panera so I'm there all the time!)

The Fresh & Easy is taking shape now. I suspect the parking lot is gonna be crazy when this thing is built out. Ever tried parking at Rivermark around lunchtime or straight after work (5:30pm - 6:30pm). It's gonna be like that!

    ReplyDelete
  74. During lunch it will probably be nuts like Rivermark... HOWEVER, for dinner or on the weekend you can park in the massive Brocade structure. There will always be enough parking after work hours.

    ReplyDelete
  75. A little wine bar would be nice..was really hoping for a Trader Joe's not Fresh & Easy.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I keep asking Trader Joe's if they would open up in the Berryessa area, and they say there is not enough "need" over there. I disagree. I wish they would consider it. Jamba Juice, or a nice coffee/dessert place would be nice. I also suggest "Counters", or even a recycled bookstore w/ coffee to hang out.
